Determination of network status according to Section 14a of the German Law on Energy Management
The challenge
The obligatory determination of network status according to Section 14a EnWG is the foundation of network-based monitoring. Critical network conditions must be documented and control commands must be issued from the network operator within 5 minutes. In the event of network-based control the network operator is obliged to clarify the critical network situation based on clear output measured values in order to justify the measure that was performed.
To do so, it is not just necessary to equip distribution substations and distributors with measurement technology, existing stations must also be retrofitted or improved. These are often not designed for this purpose, the required data connections are not available to a sufficient extent and there is not always enough space for distribution substations and distributors.
Solution
The UMG 800 is the foundation for the necessary network transparency to implement the requirements of Section 14a. The expansion modules and the use of measurement groups up to 32 outputs with a single device. The streamlined design and extremely compact modules mean this measurement technology can be integrated into new and current systems.
Numerous communication interfaces as well as white listing, individual modbus address lists and other features simplify system integration whilst also allowing for data transmission in real time.
Evaluation
With the Remote Display RD 96, the measured values from the UMG 800 can be read out and analyzed on site. Configurations are also possible via the additional display, which is either fixed into position as a maintenance display or can be used on the move. It is connected via the USB interface. Remote maintenance and analysis is readily possible due to the integrated web server.
System integration
The UMG 800 is 2 sub-units in size and the space-saving 800-CT8-LP modules can be easily integrated into existing distribution substations. A wide range of interfaces simplify on-site connections and communication protocols such as OPC UA and Modbus TCP/IP provide simple connection options.
Mechanisms such as Modbus white listing also enhance data security and an integrated memory stores all relevant data if the connection is interrupted.
Network stabilization with the UMG 800
The challenge
A regional energy supplier faced the challenge of making energy consumption in its network more efficient. Despite state-of-the-art technology, unexpected load peaks and inefficient consumption patterns lead to increased operational costs and network fluctuations.
Solution
The energy supplier used the UMG 800 to counteract these issues as it can monitor gridded and sliding average values.
Thanks to this function, the energy supplier gets an accurate long-term report of energy consumption and load on the network. A particularly helpful feature is the recording of critical 200 ms minimum and maximum values, which make it possible to detect load peaks early and quickly react to potential issues. This data helps the company to carry out the right measures to avoid downtime and optimize energy usage within the network.
Simple integration into existing systems via OPC USA and Modbus/TCP means technicians can monitor energy consumption at all times and make informed decisions on how to optimize the network. Continuous monitoring of the average values means inefficient consumption can be quickly detected and sustainable measures can be implemented to save energy.
Network stabilization
The recording and storage of gridded and sliding average values helps to recognize energy consumption trends. At the same time, critical 200ms max/min values are stored and these provide valuable insights so that load peaks can be quickly detected and necessary measures taken.
In addition, the UMG 800 offers 1-minute average values for current and output records in order to implement regulatory requirements and to proactively stabilize the network. High levels of measuring accuracy and realtime data enable rapid responses in the event of faults.

Communication
The UMG 800 can be easily integrated into external systems. Measured values can be accessed at any time, anywhere, via OPC UA and Modbus/TCP as well as the integrated web server. In addition, freely configurable Modbus address lists can be prepared via the web server. This allows for simple data access and individual mapping on available communications structures.
Communication and data analysis on site are possible through the RD 96 remote display, which can be easily connected via the USB interface. It means that configurations and fault analyses can be readily carried out on site.
Comparators are integrated into the energy analyzer to reduce data traffic and associated costs. As an example, messages are only sent if threshold values are exceeded.
If communications are interrupted then data is stored due to the large 4 GB memory and continuous data logging is ensured.
